DuPont State Forest
Located
in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Western North
Carolina between Hendersonville and Brevard,
the DuPont State Forest features 10,400
acres of pristine forest that draws visitors
from all over the area. The Forest was
originally 7600 acres established in 1996
through a generous bargain sale from the
DuPont Corporation, but was expanded by two
properties in 2000, including 2200 acres
containing High Falls, Triple Falls, and
Bridal Veil Falls. There are approximately
90 miles of trails and dirt roads in the
DuPont State Forest, each with varying
degrees of difficulty and each offering
unique treasures along the way.
Located in an upland plateau of the Little
River valley, DuPont State Forest is made up
of gently rolling forested land surrounded
by the granite ridges and domes of the
mountains. Elevations in the Forest range
from 2300' below Hooker Falls to more than
3600' at the top of Stone Mountain. The majority of the land is untouched
forest, save for 21 small wildlife clearings
and several hundred acres of exposed
granite. DuPont State Forest also contains
four major waterfalls on the Little River,
as well as several smaller falls on the
Grassy Creek.
The first and most unique set of falls on
the Little River is known as Bridal Veil
Falls. First, the falls drop off an
overhanging ledge which allows visitors to
walk underneath. This section of the falls
was featured in Last of the Mohicans. After
this, the water runs down a long, shallow
incline of granite before crashing into the
pool below. Bridal Veil Falls is truly one
of the most unique waterfalls in the
southeast. The next set of falls on the
Little River is High Falls. High Falls
slides about 150' down an inclined plane of
granite. There are two ways to view the
falls; one from a picnic shelter above, and
from a trail below the falls.
Aside from
hiking, there are a number of
activities to enjoy in DuPont State Forest. The area is quickly becoming one of the
leading destinations for mountain bikers in
Western North Carolina. The forest offers
trails suitable for both beginners and
experts, with breathtaking scenery around
every bend. The over 80 miles of
trails are also available to horseback
riders. This is one of the most unique ways
to enjoy the scenery of DuPont State Forest.
DuPont is one of the true treasures of the
Blue Ridge Mountains. The opportunities
afforded here for stunning mountain vistas,
peaceful
NC hiking trails, and majestic
NC waterfalls are beyond compare in most of the
Southeastern United States.
