wonderful fly fishing spots around Transylvania County.
The Davidson River is a midsized stream that flows through the
Pisgah National
Forest into the French Broad River near Brevard NC. Listed on Trout Unlimited’s 100 best streams in the country, the Davidson River is a great place
to cast your rod. Expect to catch rainbow trout, brown trout and the occasional
brook trout. Parts of this long river are under catch and release restrictions,
so keep these North Carolina wildlife regulations in mind. Just a short drive
away from the Davidson River, the North Mills River is a phenomenal spot to fish
as well and is not as widely known.
Avery Creek is a smaller tributary of the Davidson River that is classified as a
Wild Trout stream and provides some excellent fishing opportunities in the
spring and summer. In this creek you will be able to catch, brightly colored,
wild trout that are anywhere from 7 to 10 inches long.
Looking
Glass Creek feeds the famous waterfall, Looking Glass Falls and is also a major
tributary of the Davidson River. Those seeking the enjoyable NC fly fishing
experience here
will want to fish the half-mile stretch just below the falls. Looking Glass
Creek is filled with plenty of smaller, wild, rainbow and brown trout, so expect
to catch a large amount of smaller fish. This is one of the most beautiful
creeks to enjoy fishing as it is located within the pristine, Pisgah National
Forest.
The Shining Rock Wilderness area is a very large region that runs through the
Pisgah National Forest and has several great streams to fish. Much of the
terrain in this area is rugged and mountainous as the area has an elevation of
about 3,200 feet above sea level. Here the West Fork of the Pigeon River flows
through the region and is a wonderful, secluded place to fish for large sized
rainbow and brown trout.
Another lesser known spot to fish and enjoy is in the
DuPont State Forest in the
eastern part of
Transylvania County. Here the Little River runs through the area
and creates some great fishing streams and mountain brooks. Due to this river’s
designation as a Delayed Harvest, catch and release stream an abundance of fish
are stocked seasonally, making for a very dense fish population. You can fish
all day in the plunge pools and wide open parts and never run out of fish to
catch. Be sure to check out this great spot!
The French Broad river is the largest and most well known river in Western North
Carolina. Flowing through Brevard NC and then into Asheville, the French Broad
river creates several excellent places to enjoy fishing in the Brevard area.
Smallmouth bass are very popular on the French Broad River and catching a foot-long bass is relatively common in this area.
