the educational centers and interesting
attractions found in the Pisgah National
Forest and the Blue Ridge Parkway. The
Cradle of Forestry, The Pisgah Center for
Wildlife Education, and the North Carolina
Arboretum are three must-see places.
The Cradle of Forestry, located in the
Pisgah National Forest, is a 6,500 acre
National Historic Site. Many years ago, the
Cradle of Forestry was created by the United
States Congress to memorialize the beginning
of forestry conservation efforts in the
United States. At this site visitors can
tour the many NC hiking trails and learn more
about the history of forestry conservation
in America. This is one of the most
beautiful regions of the Pisgah National
Forest; do not miss this opportunity to see
the untouched forests and lush landscapes.
At
the Pisgah Center for Wildlife Education you
can discover and learn more about the native
wildlife of the mountains. Visitors to the
center can enjoy the many aquariums and
hands-on exhibits and walk through the many
lovely gardens. At different times of the
season the center features special programs
where visitors can view the feeding of the
animals and interact with a variety of
wildlife. The center is open daily, except
for major holidays.
The North Carolina Arboretum is a 426 acre
horticulturalist's dream. Filled with
collections of gardens, forests, hiking
trails and several horticultural exhibits,
the North Carolina Arboretum is located in
the Bent Creek Experimental Forest area
of the Pisgah National Forest. The arboretum
serves as a regional resource for education
and conservation efforts and features
several varieties of unique and hybrid
plants. Many of the gardens and forests at
the North Carolina Arboretum are still
actively growing and forming, however the
arboretum is still a great place to visit
and enjoy. Visitors enjoy seeing the
beautiful, native plants and there is even a
forest of Metasequoias found here that are
said to be the tallest in the south,
reaching a height of over 100 feet.
While
visiting the beautiful Pisgah National
Forest, take time to visit the natural
recreation area, Sliding Rock. Sliding Rock is a huge
60-foot flat boulder, with a mild slope,
creating the best natural waterslide you'll
ever see. Kids and
children alike enjoy sliding down the
slippery rock into the 6-8 foot deep wading
pool at the bottom. Managed by the US Forest
Service, Sliding Rock is a great place to
visit while on your vacation.
Two viewing decks are located opposite the
rock and they are the best spots to take
pictures from. In recent years, Sliding Rock
has drawn record crowds, so be prepared for
lines at certain times of the season.
Parking for the Sliding Rock is located
beside US Highway 276, and the rock slide is
located below. To get to Sliding Rock take US 276 and the
recreation area is located approximately 7.7
miles north of the intersection of US 276,
US 64 and NC 280 in Brevard, North Carolina.
Drive a bit further down US 276 and you’ll
come to another beautiful waterfall and
recreation area, Looking Glass Falls. Just
five miles past the Pisgah National Forest
entrance, Looking Glass Falls is a 60 foot
waterfall with a nice, shallow wading pool
at the bottom and is a great place to take
smaller children. In the winter months the
water flowing down the falls typically
freezes and in sunlight sometimes resembles
a mirror, or looking glass, as it is named.
While climbing and jumping off the rocks
surrounding the falls is not allowed,
Looking Glass Falls is a nice place to cool
off and enjoy the extraordinary mountain
scenery. There are numerous
waterfalls in North Carolina located in
Transylvania County near the Pisgah
National Forest NC. Our stunning,
luxury NC mountain
cabins are located near Brevard and these
beautiful areas. With wonderful amenities,
